Would You Pay $45 for a Carry-On Bag on Your Next Flight?

A small airline based in Florida is planning to charge $45 for carry-on bags, reports The Huffington Post, citing AP.

Spirit Airlines, a discount airline that mostly flies out of Florida in the US to Latin America, says the charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free.

The new charge begins on Aug. 1. Spirit says the charge should reduce the number of carry-on bags, which will help empty the plane faster after flights. It also charges to check luggage.

Even though Spirit is a minor player, bigger airlines are likely to watch to see whether customers are willing to pay for carry-ons.

Spirit travelers will get a $10 discount off the $45 charge if they pay for the service online. Customers who belong to the airline's fare club will be charged $20 per carry-on bag.
