In 2009 there were 1740 drug addicts registered in Armenia of which 12 were women, Head of Sociometer Centre Aharon Adibekyan said at a press conference today.

The quantity of drug addicts is counted based on the number of cases the citizens apply for medical help to get rid of their addiction.

Saying that in 2010 the number of drug addicts has doubled Adibekyan mentioned that it is accounted for by the fact that the addicts have become freer in using drugs.

According to Adibekyan there are now 7000 drug addicts in Armenia.

Asked which of the drugs is mostly being used in Armenia he named marijuana, while those better-off mostly use opium and cocaine. He also said that there are other widely-spread types of drugs in Armenia such as koaksil (250 AMD per tablet).

Further Adibekyan said that the narcotics are being brought to Armenia mostly from Central Asia and Azerbaijan.
