International Bodies Will Be Notified about Incidents on Azatutyun Square: Levon Zurabyan

The Armenian National Congress (HAK) will draw international attention to the recent incidents on Azatutyun Square in downtown Yerevan, HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan told a press conference today.

“Though that campaign was not organized by us, most of our activists took part in it, and their rights were violated, and we will back them politically, morally and judicially. Particularly, we will help [them] do all the right judicial steps that need to be taken in such situations. Naturally, we will raise this issue in various global bodies, in the Council of Europe, in other places, requiring to properly treat those encroachments by the authorities,” said Zurabyan.

According to him those incidents taking place in the recent three days in Yerevan testify to the fact that there is a “police regime” in Armenia.

“The number of political prisoners became 17,” said Zurabyan, informing those present that of all the Armenian citizens taken to the police from Azatutyun Square during the recent days three have already been arrested on Monday.

Further Zurabyan said that Ani Gevorgyan, a journalist of the local Armenian daily Haykakan Jamanak (Armenian Time) has been arrested on charges of “committing non-dangerous violation against a policeman,” while the other two young activists, namely Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramijyan were arrested on “hooliganism” charges.
