Ani Gevorgyan Released: Davit Kiramijyan Will Be Arrested

Ani Gevorgyan, journalist of the local Armenian daily Haykakan Jamanak (Armenian Time), and her brother Sargis Gevorgyan have been released today based on a signature confirming that they will not leave the country, Ani Gevorgyan’s lawyer Lusine Sahakyan told Tert.am.

They had been taken to the police on June 1 as they attempted with other opposition representatives to enter the recently re-opened Azatutyun (Liberty) Square near the Opera House in downtown Yerevan.

Sahakyan also said that the police have presented a motion to use arrest as precautionary measure toward Davit Kiramijyan, the third citizen taken to the police on the same day.

The re-opening of Azatutyun Square has kicked up several clashes between the police and oppositionists recently.

Earlier today Civil Society Institute issued a statement requiring releasing those detained.

"We think that Davit Kiramijyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and Ani Gevorgyan are kept illegally," read the statement, adding that they require to immediately release those arrested, to stop the restrictions on citizens' right to freedom of expression and free movement and to investigate the circumstances in which those civilians participated in the police actions on Azatutyun Square.
