How Can One Be Part of ‘Armenian Land’ Who Does Not Speak Armenian?

Re-opening of foreign-language schools in Armenia continues to kick up emotions.

At a press conference today We are Against Opening Foreign-Language Schools civil initiative one more time unveiled its concerns over the issue.

Armen Hovhannisyan, member of the initiative, said they raised the issue to the prime minister at an IT event held on Sunday, adding that Tigran Sargsyan could not dispel the worries they had.

“I am familiar with the prime minister’s theory of ‘Armenian Land’ far long ago. One more time Mr prime minister affirmed that and said that the ‘Armenian Land’ is not only in Armenia, and that it is not only the Armenians that should be part of that ‘Armenian Land,’ that is to say, someone, who does not live in Armenia, may become part of the ‘Armenian Land’, ” Hovhannisyan told Tert.am.

Further he said they are against even the recent amendments introduced to the draft which propose organizing the teaching process in a foreign-language as soon as the pupils are in their fifth form.

The reason they are against these amendments is that children will obtain elementary knowledge in Armenian, but when they are supposed to start learning more complex things and get familiar with the basis of science, they are offered to learn it in a foreign language.

“In Armenia education must be in Armenian. This is our requirement,” said Hovhannisyan.
