Turner fetches record price at London auction

A work by British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner fetched a new record price at a London auction, selling for more that 45 million dollars, a news report said Thursday.

Turner's Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino sold at a Sotheby's auction Wednesday evening for 29.72 million pounds (45.2 million dollars), easily topping a previous 20.5-million-pound record for one of the British master's paintings reached at a 2006 auction, the Associated Press reported.

'This breathtaking image shows the artist at his absolute best and, for collectors, it ticked all the boxes - quality, superb condition, provenance and freshness-to-the-market,' AP quoted David Moore-Gwyn, Sotheby's deputy chairman and specialist in British paintings, as saying.
