World's oldest shoe exhibited in Yerevan

A 5500-year-old leather shoe recently found in Areni 1 cave, in Vayots marz (province), Armenia, is now being exhibited in the History Museum of Armenia.

The shoe which is stuffed with dry grass is put under a glass cover.

A guide in the museum told Tert.am that it attracts the attention of not only Armenian visitors, but also numerous foreign tourists, adding that the museum can provide all the conditions necessary for the preservation of the shoe.

Earlier archeologist and head of the American expedition Grigor Areshian had voiced concern over the conservation of the shoe.

The issue is now being discussed also in the Ministry of Culture. But no decision has been made yet.
