The Kosovo precedent can be used for Karabakh, says politologist

Armenia much in the same way as in rapprochement with Turkey can be the first to take initiatives when it comes to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Head of Analytical Centre for Globalisation and Regional Cooperation Stepan Grigoryan told a press conference today.

The Karabakh conflict, according to Grigoryan, is impossible to solve given the current atmosphere of mutual mistrust, therefore Armenia may propose to OSCE Minsk Group to bring the issue of improving this atmosphere on the agenda of the talks.

In his opinion the Madrid Principles, as well as the Obama-Sarkozy-Medvedev statement made in June are beneficial for Armenia, and that Yerevan must propose Azerbaijan to sign that document, so that in future Baku does not withdraw from what was agreed upon.

Under this scenario Armenia must propose that the OSCE Co-Chair states must start to unilaterally recognize the independence of Nagorno Karabakh, should Azerbaijan denounce any point in the agreement.

"This is a well-known mechanism, I am not telling you anything new; it was this mechanism that was used in Kosovo's case," said Grigoryan.
