Georgia promises to restore Surb Gevorg church of Mughni

The restoration program of the Armenian Surb Gevorg Church in Tbilisi (Saint Gevorg of Mughni) comprises three stages. The first one, which mainly deals with research, is already over, Armenia’s Deputy Culture Minister Arevik Samuelyan told a press conference today.

The model of the church will be ready in September, while the final project the Georgian side will present till the end of this year.

Surb Gevorg Church collapsed in November 2009 which roused public ire in Armenia.

According to her the agreement was reached from 5-12 August when an Armenian delegation was in Georgia. But the final discussions about the restoration works will be held in Armenia attended by the Georgian delegation.

Restoration works will start next year.

Samuelyan further said that the total amount of the financial resources necessary for the restoration will be known as soon as the final project is ready, adding that Georgia has allocated $26,000 for the restoration.

Samuelyan also said that the Armenian delegation visited Surb Astvatsatsin Church in Norashen. This church too needs restoration, and the Georgian authorities have promised to allot money for the purpose next year.
