Imperfection of polit. system is to blame: Surenyants quits politics, suspending party membership

The first reason member of the political body of the Republic Party Suren Surenyants will quit politics is Armenia’s imperfect political system, Mr Surenyants told Tert.am as he commented on his personal blog post about his resignation published earlier Tuesday.

“I don’t see a real political struggle, competition; therefore I don’t have the will to be part of these relations. We have authorities that don’t want to be reformed and an opposition that cannot create a new quality. Politics becomes imitation under these conditions,” said Mr Surenyants.

Secondly, by quitting politics he attempts preventing any tension between his party and the dominant opposition movement Armenian National Congress (HAK) that currently comprises 18 political parties.

“I have preferred to sacrifice my political ambitions to a broader objective,” he noted, adding that simultaneously he is temporarily suspending also his party membership.

Speaking about recent reports in the media as if former Armenian President and HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan and head of the Republic Party Aram Sargsyan have due to him had a quarrel, Surenyants said: “There is no such thing, even because Aram Sargsyan isn’t in Armenia. By that step of mine I am neutralizing any possible tension and undoubtedly will in all kinds of elections support the political line adhered by Aram Sargsyan.”

Further he mentioned that the reason of this current situation has actually been his recent meeting with Armenia’s Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan which caught wide media spotlight and sparked a lot of discussions as “we have an ailing political system.”

“The impression is that I have met with Azerbaijani defense minister … This meeting became the very indicator which revealed the imperfectness of our political system,” said Mr Surenyants.
