Georgia threatened by Russian military base in Gyumri: expert

The prolongation of the agreement that regulates the presence of the Russian military base in Armenia's second-largest city town Gyumri is a serious message for Tbilisi, said Georgian politologist on Caucasus issues Mamuki Areshidze.

"It is a sword of Damocles, hung on Georgia, that can be used anytime," Novosti Gruzia website quotes him as saying.

The aforementioned agreement is expected to be refreshed in the framework of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's August 19 visit to Armenia. The duration of this document is expected to be prolonged up to 49 years which has kicked up various reactions in Armenia.
