Iran is potential wheat market for Armenia to import

Armenia is considering Iran as a positional market for wheat imports after Russia imposed a ban on its wheat products following a drought season and wildfires affecting many parts of the country, according to Iran.ru.

Armenia’s annual wheat consumption is 700,000 tones of which it can produce only 200,000 tones. But recently the amount of wheat produced in Armenia has for several reasons – among them also lack of water resources – reduced, causing the country to increase wheat imports by16 per cent.

Armenia needs to think about the self-sufficiency of wheat production, as Russia’s ban did not affect wheat prices in many countries, such as Iran, that can produce enough wheat for their domestic consumption, an Economy Ministry official said.

Wheat produces in Iran are said to increase by 2.5m tones this year, and in all probability Armenia should start importing wheat from Iran, said an official from Consumer Rights Protection organization in Armenia.
