Declaration of Independence, August 23

Today is the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Armenia’s Independence.

The Declaration of Armenia’s Independence was adopted at the first session of the Supreme Council on 23 August in 1990. The text of the declaration was read by the then deputy Aram Manukyan.

Due to that document Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia was renamed into the Republic of Armenia.

Upon the decision of the Supreme Council Armenia held a referendum on September 21, 1991 to secede from the USSR and declare independence. About 94.99 per cent of Armenia’s electorate voted for the independence which resulted in the Supreme Council’s declaration of Armenia as an independent state two days after the referendum.
