Even the president takes an oath, why shouldn’t teachers?

The 2010-2011 school year will from the previous one differs in the sense that the Armenian teachers will from now on have to take an oath, Armenia’s Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan said at a press conference today.

“People of various professions take oaths, the president, and the deputies. The oath is for those who appreciate the value of their word,” said Mr Ashotyan, adding that by taking the oath once again the teachers confirm that education is a mission, and that the consumer of education is the school-child.

Further he said that there may be some editing and changes in the text of the oath, but that, according to Mr Ashotyan, is a secondary issue.

“The protocol is very simple: on 1 September, before the first lesson, one of the teachers will read the text and the rest will repeat,” explained he, adding that as of next year the oath will be taken by new teachers only.
