Only the court can solve expelled professors' problem, says education minister

Armenia's Ministry of Education and Science has no such authority to intervene and solve the problems in the French University in Armenia, Minister Armen Ashotyan told Tert.am.

Earlier 29 professors of this university, who had been expelled, sent a letter to several high-ranking officials related to their expulsion, among them were also Education Minister, as well as to Armenia's Human Rights Defender Armen Harutyunyan and Artur Baghdasaryan, Head of the Trustee Board of the university who happens to be also the head of the Rule of Law party and the Secretary of the National Security Council at the presidential administration.

Mr Ashotyan explained that this university is a fund by its status and therefore is not under the ministry's jurisdiction. According to him, if there is any violation pertaining to labor laws and the law in general, the issue can only be settled by the court.
The professors have already said that they will lodge a lawsuit over the issue.

Mr Ashotyan also said that he would raise the issue as the university's board member at an upcoming council session.

"I will raise the issue at the council session to be held at the close of September to be provided with explanations," said he.
