Karabakh's 19 years of independence

On 2 September 1991 local authorities of the then Autonomous Region of Nagorno Karabakh adopted a declaration on the temporary state power and governance of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh laying the foundations of the modern history of Karabakh as an independent and sovereign state.

On 10 December 1991, just days before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Nagorno Karabakh held a referendum and declared independence.

Of all the participants (108,615) 99.89 per cent voted for the declaration.

Later Karabakh held parliamentary elections and convened the first government of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh.

Every year Karabakh is holding various festivities to celebrate the anniversary of independence. A series of festive celebrations are planned this year too.
