New plans with new season: HAK to commence seizing back Azatutyun Square

Opposition movement Armenian National Congress (HAK) has released a statement today relating to a recent decision by Yerevan Municipality which did not authorize the HAK to hold a rally on Azatutyun (Liberty) Square - a traditional venue for Armenian opposition to hold rallies.

"All are equal before the law. If the Municipality wants to hold any events that will allow it to ban other events, then it must according to the law notify [the other side] about it, which it hasn't done. In this way, the decision by the Municipality is totally unlawful," reads the statement.

Further it mentions that "terrorized by opposition's rally on Azatutyun Square the authorities also acknowledge that they do not control the situation in the country and do not consider the domestic political crisis resolved."

"Through their actions the authorities demonstrate that they are in fact ready to breach the country's Constitution and the laws, the International Convention on Human Rights, to undermine the country's international credit only to prevent opposition's rally on Azatutyun Square," reads the statement.

Also it says that HAK will on a daily basis submit applications to Yerevan Municipality and will ask to authorize a rally on Azatutyun Square and will dispute the refusals in the court, in the European Court of Human Right if need be, as well as other international human rights organizations.

"And if the authorities do not accept any application to hold a rally on Azatutyun Square, then the opposition reserves the right to appoint a rally on Azatutyun Square and will hold it regardless what the authorities will decide."
