Re-Winning Azatutyun Square: HAK submitted next notification to Yerevan Municipality

Local Armenian opposition movement Armenian National Congress (HAK) has submitted a notification to the Yerevan Municipality about a rally it is planning to held on September 24 on Azatutyun (Liberty) Square, Arman Musinyan, Spokesperson for the HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan, told Tert.am, adding that they have already started what he called the "process of re-wining the square back."

"We have started that process and one of the steps of that process is submitting a notification to the [Yerevan] Municipality. We will consistently continue the process of re-winning Azatutyun Square back," said Musinyan, adding that Yerevan Municipality will discuss their application on Wednesday.

Earlier the HAK had asked the Yerevan Municipality to authorize it holding a rally on Azatutyun Square on September 17, but the Yerevan Municipality had rejected it, pointing to the fact that another event had been scheduled at the same site on that very day.
The Yerevan Municipality had instead allowed the HAK to hold the rally in the vicinities of Matenadaran. However, it had authorized the HAK to start the march from the Azatutyun Square - a symbolic venue opposition has traditionally used for rallies and demonstrations.

That prompted the HAK to appeal the decision of the Yerevan Municipality at the Administrative Court which ruled in favor of the Yerevan Municipality, something quite expected for the HAK.

HAK lawyer Vahe Hovsepyan told Tert.am then that they will appeal the Administrative Court's ruling at the Court of Cassassion.
Interestingly, the HAK has also said it will take the issue to the European Court of Human Rights, if need be.
