UN must appoint special representative for Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, says former Latvian president

The UN must appoint a special representative for the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Former Latvian president and special envoy to the UN Secretary General and Vice-Chairwoman of the Group of Experts on the long-term development of the European Union, told media in Baku.

According to Azerbaijani news agency Trend, she said that the appointment of a special representative could accelerate the settlement of the conflict.

The conflict between Karabakh and Azerbaijan began in 1988 when the Azerbaijani started pogrom in Baku, Sumgait and other Azerbaijani territories. Azerbaijan was defeated in war losing some territories.
The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is currently spearheaded by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and US.

Azerbaijan has failed to implement UN Security Council resolutions.
