Russian president fires Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has sacked Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, a Kremlin spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Medvedev's decree stripped Luzhkov of his post "because he has lost the trust of the president of the Russian Federation," Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Russia's constitution allows the president to sack the Moscow mayor and regional governors for such a reason.

Medvedev, currently on a visit to China, has appointed Vladimir Resin as acting mayor of Moscow, the agencies quoted the Kremlin as saying.
