Georgian FM Vashadze denies speaking about Armenia's sovereignty

Armenia is a sovereign state and it itself decides what security system to chose, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said in a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandyan during an official visit in Yerevan.

Earlier Azerbaijani press quoted Mr Vashadze saying that the extension of the lease on the Russian military base deployed in Armenia’s second-largest town of Gyumri until 2044, is posing threat not only to Azerbaijan and Georgia, but also to the whole region and to Armenia’s independence.

“No one has the right to interfere in that affair of Armenia. Also I have never made any statement about Armenia’s independence, sovereignty and stability,” said he.

Mr Vashadze at the same time mentioned that Georgian too is a sovereign state and has the right to make statements about the deployment of the Russian military bases in the region.

According to him Russian military bases deployed in the region are posing threat to Georgia, he added, recalling that in 1921 Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan all lost their independence during a year.
