Upper Lars was closed due to technical problems, says Georgian FM Vashadze

The Upper Lars checkpoint has for the recent 10 days been closed and re-opened for several times prompting large queues on the Russo-Georgian border.

Having discussed the issue with Georgian counterpart Grigol Vashadze, Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan said in a joint press conference today that closure had been caused by technical problems.

"We have discussed the issue today. It was explained that it took place due to technical reasons," said Edward Nalbandyan.

Grigol Vashadze, in turn, reaffirmed that the closure and opening of the checkpoint has been caused due to technical problems.

"I immediately called to Tbilisi. I can tell you at the moment that the checkpoint is in full operation, and no written or oral instruction has been made from Tbilisi to close it. If there is a technical problem, we will immediately be informed, but trust me, I would be pleased to inform you that the first car has crossed the border," said Mr Vashadze.
