Young HAK activists to hold march to 'return Azatutyun Square'

Young members of the opposition movement Armenian National Congress (HAK) will hold a march at 2:30 p.m. on October 8.

The HAK youth will with this step require the ruling authorities to return Azatutyun (Liberty) Square - a traditional venue used by opposition for holding demonstrations and rallies.

Following the 2008 riots over the disputed presidential elections Azatutyun Square had for the recent two years been closed and was re-opened only this summer after the construction of an underground parking lot was completed.

The march will begin from the HAK central office on Koryun Street.

"We will by all means conquer Azatutyun Square," HAK youth activists said in a statement.

After Azatutyun Square's re-opening the HAK has for several times asked the Yerevan Municipality to sanction a rally on the Square. But the Yerevan Municipality has rejected HAK's requests, offering to hold the rally near Matenadaran building.

The HAK held its last rally near the Matenadaran on 17 September.
