Opposition to hold rally near Matenadaran today

Opposition alliance Armenian National Congress (HAK) will hold a rally next to the Matenadaran’s building.

It comes as part of HAK’s campaign to what they call “bringing back” the Azatutyun Square which was reopened this spring following a two-year period of closure due to the construction of an underground parking lot.

The HAK had earlier said that the agenda will include topics such as “the political and economic consequences of the corruption that reaches disastrous levels in Armenia”, “the mechanisms of corruption,” “the recent scandalous deals” and “ways of recovering democracy in Armenia.”

Former Armenian president and HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan is expected to deliver a speech at the rally to widely touch upon what the HAK coorindator Levon Zurabyan has called “the corrupted situation” in the country.

The rally will be followed by a march which has been sanctioned by authorities.

The HAK had asked the Yerevan Municipality to sanction the rally on Azatutyun (Liberty) Square, but latter had rejected the appeal, offering instead the area in the vicinities of Matenadaran.

Azatutyun Square has traditionally been used for demonstrations and rallies.

Recently Levon Zurabyan said that one day the HAK will enter Azatutyun Square without any sanction as soon as it loses its patience.
