Medieval Armenian town of Ani is on the brink of extinction, warns Global Heritage Fund

Global Heritage Fund has released a list of historical monuments which are on the brink of extinction.

It includes 12 Armenian monuments, among them also the medieval town of Ani.

The report says that Turkish authorities must take immediate actions to save Ani’s ruins from eventual extinction.

“The town of Ani, established by Armenians in the 10-11th century, is a monument of the Armenian great civilization and is second to none. Today the town of Ani – mainly turned into ruins – tells about a tragedy; it has several times been attacked, while the Armenians had to leave the town during the Turkish rule in the 14th century,” reads the report.

Further it says that since then Ani remained defenseless against the robbers and vandals, though most of its beauty has been preserved.

“But to save Ani from final extinction, immediate actions are necessary to take,” the reports adds.
