Prosecution demands 8 year for main defendant in Khalafyan’s case

The Court of First Instance of Kotayk province held today the next court session over Vahan Khalafyan’s case.

The prosecution delivered an accusatory speech, requiring the court to sentence Ashot Harutyunyan, the main defendant and former head of the investigation’s department of the Charentsavan police, to 8 years of imprisonment.

It also required the court to conditionally not use the punishment for the other three decedents in this case – all officers at the Charentsavan police.

The defense will deliver a speech on November 1 with the day of the announcement of the verdict to be decided.

According to the official version, Vahan Khalafyan stabbed himself to death after he was allegedly subjected to degrading treatment and torture during the interrogation.

But Khalafyan’s relatives, as well as human rights defenders say he was killed by the policemen who interrogated him.

All the defendants involved in the case are police officers and accused of making Khalafyan to committing suicide.
