Opponents of foreign-language schools demonstrate in front of parliament

"We are against the Opening of Foreign-Language Schools" group is holding a demonstration in front of the National Assembly today in an effort of voicing its dissent against the re-opening of foreign-language schools.

"The National Assembly will in today's four-day session adopt a decision to introduce amendments to the laws on language and public education. The bill envisages the opening of foreign language schools which will put the Armenian language and statehood under extremely big threat," reads a statement released by the group.

The initiative to-reopen foreign-language schools in Armenia - mainly backed by Russian-Armenian tycoon Ruben Vardanyan - have sparked discontent in the country.

Critics say it will harm the Armenian education and mindset, posing threat also to the Armenian language, while proponents insist otherwise.
