Obligatory car insurance will be time-consuming for police officers

From January 2011 the Armenian police officers will fine those drivers who will not have their cars insured by then.

The fine will make a total of 50,000 drams, Head of Patrol Service Department at the Armenian Police Norik Sargsyan told a press conference today.

Armenia recently initiated a controversial rule that defines obligatory car insurance for all Armenian drivers.

The initiative has kicked up a lot of discontent in the society.

Norik Sargsyan also said that the new law will make the policemen's work harder as all the drivers will from next year on require the police officers to start proceedings in case of car accident.

Currently it takes a policeman from 10-15 minutes to make all the documentation in a car accident. But starting the proceedings will take those 40-45 minutes, which is rather a time-consuming process for a police officer in the street.

"All those involved in a street accident will from now on require starting proceedings. Currently, the drivers can agree with each other and solve their problems," explained Mr Sargsyan.
