Newly elected Congress seems more pro-Armenian

Republican’s victory in United States Congressional midterm and local elections demonstrated Obama’s weakness, but the US President is not that weak, according to Richard Giragosyan, Head of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS).

In a discussion today the analyst introduced his report on US elections, attaching importance to the fact that most of pro-Armenian candidates have been re-elected.

“There are two reasons for congressional hearings over the Armenian Genocide resolution. First the Republicans are eager to use it as a sanction against Turkey, and secondly, a great number of pro-Turkish republicans want the document to be adopted because of Israel. The Genocide issue is of key importance now, but that’s mostly because of Turkey-US and US-Israel relations,” the expert said.

As a possible period for holding congressional hearings over the resolution, the speaker pointed out to either November, before the elections time, or January, after the elections. At that, he stressed his positive attitude to both options, adding that the newly elected congress is expected to be more pro-Armenian.
