Opposition rally to draw attention on human rights issues

Opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) is organizing a 6-hour rally at midday on November 9 on Charles Aznavour Square, not far from the venue of an EU-Armenia conference.

Simultaneously, several youth groups are holding a protest from 9 a.m. in the morning.

HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan announced earlier that this was going to be a pressure rally aimed at focusing participants’ attention on political prisoners’ problem in Armenia.

Later today, at 6 p.m., HAK activists will hold a demonstration in support of the reinstatement of democratic freedoms, release of political prisoners and foreign policy challenges.

The demonstration will be conducted by HAK’s board president Aram Manukyan; speeches will be delivered by Armenia’s first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, recently released political prisoner Ashot Manukyan and leaders of Hanrapetutyun (republic) Party and People’s Party of Armenia Aram Sargsyan and Stepan Demirchyan.

The demonstration will be followed by the opposition’s march.

The HAK calls on citizens to contact its (tel. 52–09–74) in case of facing any obstacles imposed by road police or other state or private agencies.
