HAK waiting for response by General Prosecutor's Office

Opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) waiting for a response by the General Prosecutor's Office, HAK legal service representative Armen Khachatryan told Tert.am.

Earlier, HAK submitted a report to the General Prosecutor's Office, protesting against the police operations against the 4 opposition members taken to the police station during the rally on November 9.

"The police interfered with the non-mass public event and abused its authority, using force and depriving young activists of the right to have a lawyer. They beat the young activists at the police department," HAK had said in a statement.

"The law gives the General Prosecutor's Office 10 days' time. We have sent the report by post and that will probably take a couple of more days, but the response should be delivered within the coming week or 10 days," Khachatryan told journalists.

"The General Prosecutor's Office has to decide whether to file or reject the case, or consider the possibility of sending it to Kentron (Centre) district's investigative department which has jurisdiction to investigate it," he added.

According to young opposition member Tigran Arakelyan, the police have not yet returned the items belonging to the 4 young activists. In that connection, Armen Khachatryan promised to handle the issue after changing the lawyer.

The clash between the police and young HAK activists occurred during the 6-hour-long opposition rally on November 9, near the venues of EU-Armenia civil society conference in Yerevan. The young activists were taken to the police station where they claim to have been beaten. Later in the day, they were released to join the rally organized by the HAK.
