Will Zoravar Andranik's statue be erected in Sochi?

The statue of General Andranik Ozanian will not be erected in Sochi, Russia, head of Azerbaijani community in Sochi Jamil Aliyev told Azerbaijani news agency 1news.az.

"I have informed the municipal authorities of Sochi that it is inadmissible … I have also said that that step will be a blow to Sochi's prestige and to relations with the Azerbaijani side," Aliyev was quoted as saying.

Andranik Ozanian Toros Ozanian (known also as Zoravar Andranik) was an Armenian general, political and public activist and freedom fighter, greatly admired as a national hero.

"As a result Sochi's officials have assured us that they will study the details of the history and will not allow erecting Andranik's statue. The decision over the issue will be publicized in the coming days," said Aliyev.

The news about erecting Andranik's statue in Sochi's Lazarev region had raised discontent among the local Azerbaijani and Turks.
Local Armenians, however, say they will not quite the idea and will erect Andranik Ozanian's statue there.
