Foreign Ministry denies clashes occurred between Armenians, Azerbaijanis in Iran

There have been no clashes between the Armenians and Azerbaijanis in Iran, the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s press service says.

Citing Azerbaijani sources, Russian news website Gazeta.ru reported earlier that Armenians in the town of Tabriz, Iran came into a clash with the Azeris, during an event marking the 96th anniversary of Iranian national hero Satarhan’s death.

The incident was reportedly caused by a group of Armenian youngsters who voiced offensive statements against Azerbaijanis.

Citing Armenian sources, however, the website reports that the clash was provoked by the Azerbaijanis who attacked Armenians chanting slogans “Death or Karabakh!”, “Long Live Azerbaijan!”, “Let’s Destroy Armenia!”

After a short while, Iranian police arrived in the scene of the incident and arrested several participants. No other details are reported.
In a press release issued in this connection, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry denies the reports.

“The information provided by the Armenian Embassy in Iran is untrue,” Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Tigran Balayan told Tert.am.
