Court rejects Pashinyan's appeal and leaves his sentence unchanged

Court of General Jurisdiction of Aragatsotn marz (province) rejected a claim by jailed Chief Editor of local Armenian daily Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) Nikol Pashinyan to oblige Head of Nubarashen Penitentiary Tigran Navasardyan to reconsider his ruling over Pashinyan's prison term, a source from Haykakan Zhamanak told Tert.am.

Tigran Navasardyan had counted Pashinyan's prison term from the day (January 1, 2009) he surrendered to the police. According to that ruling, Pashinyan's sentence makes 3 years, 10 months and 20 days.

Pashinyan, however, insists that the ruling is illegal as it wrongly calculates his prison term, prolonging it by 4 months and 29 days.

He also said he would appeal Tigran Navasardyan's ruling to the Court of Appeal.

Nikol Pashinyan was sentenced to 7 years in prison for "organizing mass disorder" during the riots followed by disputed presidential elections in 2008 that left at least 7 people dead and many wounded.
