Armenian foreign and defense ministers meet their counterparts in Lisbon

The council meeting of NATO leaders and Heads of Government was held in Lisbon on November 20.

This year’s summit, devoted to Afghanistan’s issue, was attended by the top leaders of the United States, Portugal, Afghanistan, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain and other countries, as well as the Secretaries General of the United States and NATO and the President of the European Commission.

Speaking at the Summit, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan shared his concerns over the situation in Afghanistan, expressing willingness to participate in the efforts towards elaborating joint steps to assist the country.

Stressing the need of providing military and financial support to the country, Armenia’s top diplomat particularly emphasized the importance of reinstating Afghan people’s trust in their ability to build a secure and prosperous future.

During his visit to Lisbon, FM Nalbandyan also had a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Luis Amado.

Welcoming his Armenian colleague, the Portugues Foreign Minister said: “Thanks to Portugal, Armenia has a trustworthy friend willing to extend cooperation in all spheres.”

In his turn, Minister Nalbandyan expressed Armenia’s willingness to take active steps towards developing cooperation with Portugal.

Both Ministers highlighted the importance of promoting a political dialogue, conducting consultations between their ministries, establishing legal-contractual cooperation and relaxing the visa regime between their states. 

Accepting Minister Nalbandyan’s invitation to Armenia, Amado promised to visit the country during the first half of the coming year.

The meeting between Armenian and Portuguese Defense Ministers on the sidelines of the summit focused on the possibilities of broadening cooperation between their ministries.
