Cases of suicides committed by juveniles increased

The police in Armenia are concerned over the increasing number of suicides and suicide attempts by juveniles.

Some 13 suicides and 25 suicide attempts by juveniles were recorded in Armenia this year, while last year, the total number was 23, the deputy head of the Police department for Juvenile Affairs, Colonel Nelly Duryan, told journalists on Wednesday.

She said that two criminal cases have been filed for coaxing minors into suicide.

She added that suicides are committed by both children from well-to-do families and those coming from socially less secure families.

"Reasons vary – family quarrels, conflicts with parents, unrequited love and so on. Suicides are mostly committed by girls," she said.

Speaking about the tendencies of a growing Emo movement in Armenia, Duryan said she had no information whether the number of this movement members in Armenia has grown or not and refrained from accounting for the high rate of suicides by juveniles by the increased number of Emo people.

"Investigation is the only means for disclosing the reasons behind suicides," she said.
