French president abhors Turkish flag

“WikiLeaks” web site continues publishing news from leaked U.S. cables.

American diplomats wrote in October 2009 that the French President was a “mercurial” man operating in “a zone of monarch-like impunity”, The Telegraph reports.

Charles H Rivkin, the US ambassador to France, reported that the president’s plane was once even diverted to avoid him seeing the Eiffel Tower lit up in the colours of the Turkish flag because it would anger him.

The tower had been lit up for a visit by Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erodgan. Mr Sarkozy is a strong opponent of Turkey’s entry to the European Union.
