Opposition in total fiasco: Republican MP

Opposition Armenian National Congress is in total fiasco as its dreams to see the authorities defeated fell flat, Gagik Melikyan of the Republican Party faction told Tuesday a joint news conference with Vardan Khachatryan (Social-Democrat Hnchakyan party).

Speaking about tensions between the political parties, he said that such allegations were untrue.

"There is an internal rivalry between the coalition parties like in any other country of the world," he said, adding that his party is sure to receive a maximum number of votes at the upcoming parliamentary election.

Commenting on the existing tensions, Khachatryan said that they are not only of political but also of socio-economic nature.

He also spoke of the developments on the opposition front, saying that the current processes may result in unifications, re-unifications and even re-arrangements. However, he said that the real situation could be evident only three months before the election time.

Melikyan further referred to Armenian first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan's recent speech at the People's Party session where the first president deemed the country's constitution prevalent over any ideology.

In that connection, Gagik Melikyan said: "I attach much importance to ideology. Any other ideoogy which is not national is deifinately doomed to failure."
