Which is the most corrupt sphere in Armenia?

December 9 marks the International Anti-Corruption Day.

On this occasion, Transparency International (TI) anti-corruption center conducted its 2010 Global Corruption Barometer Survey for 86 world countries. The studies have revealed very interesting results for Armenia.

At a news conference on Thursday, TI Armenian office Executive Director Varuzhan Hoktanyan said he was shocked by the survey results. Armenia turned out to be the only country having the highest rate of corruption in the education sector. Corruption in this sphere has assumed such large scales that it has even left behind the judiciary and the police.

Half of the respondents believe that corruption rate in Armenia has increased over the past three years, and only 15% find that it has decreased. The number of bribe givers was reduced to 23% compared to last year's 43%.

Some 53% of the respondents found Armenian authorities' anti-corruption measures ineffectve; 20% said those measures produced no result, and only 27% found the fight against corruption effective.

"As to Azerbaijan, the situation with corruption there is much worse. Some 48% of that country's population are bribe givers," Hoktanyan said.
