Violence by officials is unacceptable, says Dashnak MP

It is unacceptable to resort to beating, violence, especially for a government official, an Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun-ARFD) MP has said.

"Generally, in any case … beating, violence, etc, especially by a government official, is unacceptable," Artsvik Minasyan told journalists today, when asked to comment on Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan's resignation.

Beglaryan was forced to resign after 'severely' beating Aram Kandayan - an employee of the Department of Protocol of the presidential administration.

"Such a conduct is unacceptable," Minasyan added. "The other issues are a matter of jurisdiction … I don't want to consider it as a political action."

Another MP, Hakob Hakobyan of the Republican Party of Armenia, avoided commenting on the issue, saying the questions should be addressed to the former mayor and the president.

"It's a matter of state relations. Therefore, that doesn't need my comment," Hakobyan said, adding he was unhappy about it.
