December 10 - International Day of Human Rights

The International Day of Human Rights is celebrated every year on this day.

United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration on Himan Rights in 1948, and December 10 was declared the International Day of Human Rights in 1950.

Human rights and fundamental freedoms have been also enshrined in the Armenian Constitution. The Institute of Human Rights Defender was established several years ago.

Events to mark the Human Rights Day will be held in Yerevan too. Open lessons on tolerance will be organized in several Armenian schools. Head the EU delegation to Armenia, Raul de Luzenberger, will deliver a lecture, and human rights defenders will convene press conferences devoted to the issue.

The opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) will organize a demonstration at 4:00 pm. ANC activists will call for the protection of human rights and release of political prisoners.
