Government official mustn't do anything not permitted, says MP

A government official must not do anything that must not be done; a Prosperous Armenia party MP has told a press conference.

Speaking about the incident that resulted in Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan's resignation, Vardan Bostanjyan said that Armenian citizens should use their potential for the benefit of the country, instead of physically assaulting people.

"We are citizens and we must live … and not do anything that must not be done," said he.

Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan was pressured to resign after he reportedly physically assaulted Aram Kandayan - an employee of the Department of Protocol at the presidential administration.

Kandayan had reportedly asked Beglaryan's wife at a concert last week in Yerevan to move to another place so that not to be immediately next to the president - something mandatory by the protocol for such events.

Vardan Bostanjyan further said it was clear for all the citizens and government officials that the incident sent them a clear message that they are not allowed to do whatever they like.

"There must be order, rules and rule of law. There must be equality before the law," said Bostanjyan, adding that the above-mentioned incident came to prove that all must be equal before the law.
