Parliamentary faction of the opposition Armenian party Heritage has sent a letter to Armenia's president, calling on him not to sign the bills that envisage re-opening of foreign-language schools in Armenia.

According to a press release by the party, with that letter it is calling on Serzh Sargsyan not to sign the draft laws meant to introduce amendments to the Law on Language and the Law on Public Education.

The amendments are paving the way for re-opening foreign-languages schools in the country.

The parliament approved the bill at an extraordinary session on December 22.

The initiative, introduced to the Armenian society since early spring this year, has sparked public discontent.

Opponents of re-opening foreign-language schools in the country say it will be a blow to the Armenian education and upbringing and is therefore unacceptable.

Earlier today, "We are against Re-Opening Foreign-Languages Schools" - a local advocacy group established to fight against the government's initiative - said in a statement that it is planning to hold a protest in front of the presidential administration on Tuesday to call on the president no to sign the bills.
