One of the United States busiest airports has been closed and more than 1,400 flights have been canceled in the New York City area because of a massive snowstorm blasting up the East Coast, The Associated Press reported.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported on its website Sunday that weather conditions had led it to close John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Port Authority operates the region's airports.

The agency's representatives didn't immediately respond to requests for comment by e-mail or phone.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said earlier that the agency expects "many" flights will be canceled Monday.

Forecasters issued a blizzard warning for New York City for Sunday and Monday. They expect 11 to 16 inches of snow and strong winds that will reduce visibility to near zero.
