Sergei Parajanov's anniversary celebrated in Tbilisi

Famous Armenian film director Sergei Parajanov's 87th birthday was celebrated in Tbilisi on Sunday.

The festive events, organized by the Georgian Ministry of Culture, started from a monument to Parajanov in Tbilisi.

Instead of flowers his art lovers put pomegranates on the monument, symbolizing their love for Parajanov's art and one of his best known films titled "The Color of Pomegranates."

The participants of the event said that a street in Tbilisi should be named after Parajanov, as he was a "true Tbilisi resident".

The celebration was continued by screenings of some excerpts of his films and an exhibition of photos and paintings dedicated to his works.

Sergei Parajanov was born on January 9, 1924. He graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography in 1952.

Some of his films - "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors," "The Color of Pomegranate," "The Legend of Suram Fortress," "Ashik Kerib" - have won international prizes and are ranked among the masterpieces of the world cinematography.
