Global warming to reduce earth's water resources by 2030 - deputy minister
Global warming is expected to cause a 6%-8% reduction of water resources by 2030, according to Armenian Deputy Minister of Nature Conservation Simon Papyan.
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, he said Armenia, as signatory to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, is implementing an environmental enhancement strategy aimed at maintaining woodlands and water resources.
As a primary concern for Armenia, he particularly referred to the problem of Lake Sevan, which apart from its environmental value, also has national security significance for Armenia.
"The level of the lake increased by over 30 cm in 2010. We are now trying to enhance the water quality and have initiated the construction of cleaning stations. Just remember that back in the 1990s Sevan gave as both electric energy and irrigation water, as well as served as a food resource," the deputy minister said.
He further stated that combating global warming requires joint efforts, whereas the world countries do not cooperate with one another, each pursuing its interests.
"Global warming is a problem that requires efforts by all countries, no matter whether big or small. Big countries like the United States or China are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, but the problem is faced by all of us," he added.
