Argentinean president visits Turkey
Argentinean President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, who is in Turkey on a working visit, has had official meetings with the country's president, Abdullah Gul, and prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish media report, adding that this is the Argentinean leader's first visit to the country over the past 19 years.
The meetings focused on Turkish-Argentinean relations. Agreements on establishing cooperation between the two countries' diplomatic academies, as well as interparliamentary collaboration and air-transfer were signed.
Almost all the Turkish media elucidated the event, reminding readers that last year Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan cancelled Kirchner's visit to the country.
It came after the Argentinean authorities refused to erect Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's statue in the country's capital due to the efforts of the local Armenian community.
In an article entitled "Armenian Genocide recognition: a step to correct past mistake", the Turkish daily Hurriyet says that the visit aims to relieve the existing tension and improve the relationship between Argentine and Turkey".
