Traffic for trucks on Transcaucasian highway closed due to heavy snowfall
The highway connecting Russia with the Transcaucasus has been closed for trucks because of yesterday's heavy snowfalls, South Ossetia's Ministry of Emergency Situations has said.
The depth of the snow cover is not posing a threat at the moment, though rescuers say vehicles have difficulty crossing the mountain pass.
Due to it, Ossetia's Committee on Emergency Situations has made a decision to temporarily close the highway for trucks, effective 09:00 pm, January 27.
Certain sources say no cargo transportation between Russia and Georgia was carried over the past few days.
As for Armenia, its cargo is safeguarded against such situations as the Upper Lars checkpoint is closed for winter months and no transportation is carried out, the general secretary of International Road Association, Herbert Hambardzumyan, has said.
"In winter months, we use ferries to transport our cargo to Nvorosiysk and Moscow via the Georgian port of Poti," he told Tert.am.
