The young representatives of the opposition alliance Armenian National Congress (ANC) hailed the struggle of the Egyptian people against their authorities and expressed their support for them.

In a statement released late on Thursday they said that they are attentively following the events taking place in Egypt.

“We are delighted by the displays of your persistence, your spirit of resistibility and high civic consciousness. We are convinced that your struggle will see a victorious end,” read the statement.

“We think that the despotism, that has nothing to give to its people, must go away and leave its place to new forces matured in the society. We hope that it will be possible to avoid new deaths, chaos and that there will be a peaceful transition to a new situation.”

Further, the young ANC representatives said that by having such an experience of struggling against despotism in Armenia, they “fully understand the resentment, the decisiveness and the yearning for freedom”.

“Unfortunately, such an uprising in our country in February 2008 was pressured in blood with the help of armed forces and armed criminal gangs, who opened fire at the direction of hundreds of thousands of people who participated in the peaceful demonstrations lasting10 days,” the statement read.

“Though our struggle didn’t see a final victory and numerous people were jailed for their own ideals … the struggle didn’t stop, and we are resisting to the police-ruled state for three years now.”

At least 10 people were killed and many wounded during the demonstrations in 2008 sparked by the presidential elections which opposition said were forged.

The ANC activists also called on all world powers to be guided solely by universal values, instead of geopolitical ones, and “meet halfway the young and progressive struggle”.

“We are convinced that a display of such decisiveness and idealism will be to the benefit of the entire world,” the statement added.
