A vintage Leica broke the world record for the most expensive camera, according to a Vienna auction house that sold it for 1.32 million euros (1.89 million dollars) on Saturday.

According to the Smarthouse, the 1923 prototype model was bought by an Asian collector, the Westlicht auction house reported.

'There is a real Leica boom at the moment,' Westlicht spokeswoman Karin Mueck said. She added that rich collectors are attracted by the legendary reputation and technical quality of the German maker's products.

According to the auction catalogue, the record-breaking O-series Leica, serial number 107, is still in excellent working order.

Previously, the world's priciest camera was a French daguerreotype-type camera that sold at Westlicht last year for 732,000 euros.
